What value does a human person have?

According to your worldview, what value does a human person have?

My personal worldview is that human beings have an instinct value. First and foremost, a human being is a creature uniquely created in the image of God. According to Genesis 1:27, “God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” This means that human beings have divine features unique from other creatures. No other creature has that likeness. Human is accorded a special role within creation. God also gave man dominion over other creation. This biblical affirmation has huge implication on how we treat ourselves and others.

The value of a human is also assigned in the institution of punishment. The person who takes another’s life is held accountable through punishment. Genesis 9:6 says, ““Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.” Exodus 20:13 lists the sixth commandment God to Moses; “You shall not murder.” The notion of murder is not just limited to intentional killing but also human death resulting from negligence and carelessness (Penner, 2017). It is this divine signature that renders all of human life inviolable. Humans ought to treat each other with dignity, care and respect. Humans should make efforts to preserve and protect life. They should say no to abortion that destroys life.

How does your position affect your stance on controversial bioethical issues, such as abortion?

My worldview on the value of human being are reflected in my position on controversial bioethical issues like abortion. The major issue regarding abortion concerns when life begins. Many schools of thought have been put forth: at concept; at birth; and at implantation. The medical community agree that humanity begins at conception, following the fusion of the sperm and egg to form an embryo. In addition to this medical; conviction, the Bible considers the human fetus a living human bearing God’s image. David talks in Psalms 139: 13 of how God created his visceral while still in the womb. According to this text, God fashions a new person before were are born. David also speaks about being conceived as a sinner in Psalms 51:5. This means one is born a sinner. Because only humans have moral responsibility, it is biblically supported that personhood starts at conception. There doing abortion could bed equal to taking another’s life. The outrage the Creator feel in aborting the fetus is highlighted in his outlawing of killing an innocent person.

Prop-choice advocates believe mothers should have a choice, especially if pregnancy resulted from rape. The forget that the choice of a mother excluding the choice of ending the life of another. Moreover, two wrongs do not make right. rape cannot be undone by committing another crime (abortion).

Stem Cell Research

Stem cells are made from the destruction of human embryos.  stem cell research puts humanity in a situation that goes against Christian tradition. Human life must be respected and valued for its worth. The intentional creation and destruction of human disregard human dignity and worth. Already numerous embryos have been destroyed than implanted. Other embryonic humans have been frozen.  What this research has done is to violate the unborn humans’ right to live. Stem cell research tries to define fertilized embryos as unworthy of life.  We need to see developing embryos as God sees us. The mystery of being that surround all human life is profound.

Designer Babies

Groundbreaking CRISPR technique has made it possible for scientists to edit the genes of a baby (Anderson, 2018). The objective of this gene editing is to cure congenital conditions at birth. While the intention is good, there is temptation to manufacture lab designer babies as a product of choice. This technique treats humans (babies) as products of choice rather than a gift from God. Germline manipulation treats the baby as a product subject to improvement. This encourages rejection of unedited embryos. As much as these technologies promise to alleviate suffering, they are not ultimate goals right now. Moreover, this technique attempts to reduce the nature of human beings to mere genetic information. A human being is not only a physical material being but also spiritual. Children are not made but begotten. The new technologies being advanced replace procreation and fertility with laboratory designer babies. Reproduction in these sterile environments risk separating the act of life-giving from the act of love-making (Anderson, 2018).

We should care about the value and dignity of human life in its origin. Otherwise, people will come to see human life as a product to be played with and discarded. Society should be careful of techniques and practices that devalue human life. Moreover, these technologies are at infant stage and yet to fulfill their promise. Embryos are destroyed needless on speculation that the research could solve many of the current challenges in the future.  Let’s value and dignify life as graced by God.
