The Slippery Genius of the Cinderella Story

The Slippery Genius of the Cinderella Story: Strengths and Weaknesses

Constance Grady presents an arguably compelling analysis of what makes the Cinderella fairy tale a timeless read. The author notes that even though significant additions and new twists have been made to the Cinderella story, it still remains a favorite across generations. A notable strength of Grady’s article is the way the author maintains his thesis statement, which postulates that despite the different versions given about Cinderella, the fairy tale still holds important lessons for families. However, Grady seems to contradict himself when he says that Cinderella is “an obliging story that’s been told and retold so often that it doesn’t really have a stable moral anymore”. Towards the close of the article, the author describes Cinderella as “an extremely durable story” that “helps us think about our families”. This may be termed as a weak point in that the author seems to lack consistency in his arguments.

That notwithstanding, the way Grady makes use of statistics to reinforce his arguments is quite impressive. To support the claim that Cinderella has gradually lost her voice, Grady provides statistical evidence that offers comparisons of how vocal Cinderella was across different periods. The author makes the following observation:

In the Grimms’ 1812 version of the story, Cinderella has 12 lines of direct speech, her stepmother four, and the prince four. But by 1857, Cinderella is down to six lines of direct speech. Where she protests her poor treatment in 1812, she obeys unquestioningly in 1864; where she lies to her stepmother in 1812, she is silent in 1864. Her stepmother, meanwhile, is up to 12 lines of direct speech in 1864, and the prince to 11. (Grady, 2019 para.22)

It is correct to say that this statistical evidence is credible because it compares between different periods. Explaining what constitutes credible statistical evidence, Browne and Keeley () argue that it is important that authors provide evidence demonstrating the increase or decrease in the phenomenon being studied. Similarly, use of comparison figures adds credibility to statistical evidence. All these are present in Grady’s article.
