Do you believe that group projects and problem solving can be accomplished without perceived proximity/ provide few examples and describe the process
The model of perceived proximity demonstrates how identification and communication processes, and certain socio-organizational and personal factors influence feelings of proximity. Conventional wisdom holds that individuals feel closest to others who are in close proximity to them. While proximity is an important factor for team performance, group members tend to feel distant when they are geographically dispersed. However, evidence shows that a person feels closer when digitally communicating with geographical distant person (Wilson, O’Leary, Metiu, & Jett, 2008). Despite the lack of face-to-face interactions, group project members often experience enough high perceived proximity to attain complex collaboration. Members perceive high echelons of proximity owing to strong communication and strong identities. For example, open source projects have managed to bring together contributions of numerous software developers scattered around the globe and to create successful products.
Perceived proximity is a critical factor for performance of geographically dispersed teams. Managing perceived proximity is particularly critical given that group members interact in computer-mediated communication environment devoid of face-to-face and initial information for other group members. Wilson, O’Leary, Metiu and Jett (2008) suggest that physical proximity has no impact on the quality of relationships in physically dispersed teams whereas perceived proximity does. Perceived proximity mediates connection between relationship quality and communication. The psychological proximity of team members is associated with group project quality. It also mediates relationships between group member isolation and group outcomes in digitally collaborative environments (Chae, 2016). Studies have established that cultural adaption and interpersonal trust are positively associated with group performance (Chae, 2016). In addition, they have found direct relationship between community quality and group member performance.
Perceived proximity is influenced by core processes of communication and identification. The depth, frequency and interactivity of communication serve to improve perceptions of proximity. Communication that is frequent, deeper in substance and more interactive increases perceptions of proximity. In regard to identification, group members who share certain social category tend to establish a shared ground from which they can work.
