Introduction

Several changes in the social, sexual, political, physical and psychological spheres take place during middle adulthood (35-65). A few of these changes are distinct to an individual and are affected by health promotion and lifestyle efforts that have accrued throughout childhood, adolescent and early adulthood. Health promotion activities pursued during middle adulthood period can still provide benefits and improve functioning in older age.   Middle-age adults are not immune to health conditions. This age group experience relatively high morbidity and mortality rate from chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancers, diabetes and hypertension. These conditions are preventable through early detection, healthy lifestyles and physical activity. The purpose of this paper is to examine the prevalence of heart disease and hypertension in society.

At Risk Health Conditions

            Hypertension remains a serious public health challenge as it amplifies the risk for other chronic diseases. The National Health and Nutrition Examination survey (NHNES) of 2016 reported the hypertension prevalence of 29% for the period 2015-2016. This prevalence increased with age and was 7.5% higher for 18-38 age group, 33.3% for 40-59 age group and 63.1% for 60 and over age group (Fryaret al. 2017).  The prevalence of high blood pressure continues to skyrocket worldwide and are the leading causes of mortality.    The number of middle-aged adults dying from heart condition is increasing in the US. The death rate has gone up by 4% between 2011 and 2017. AHA report indicates that 48% of US adults are suffering from cardiovascular disease (Adle, 2019). 18.2 million American adults aged between 20 and over have coronary heart disease, 805,000 have heart attack and while 655000 Americans die annually from heart-related diseases (Center for Disease Control and Prevention 2019).  

One of the objectives of Healthy People 2020 is disease prevention by cutting down risk factors. Physical activity and exercise some of the common strategies used for health promotion. Encouraging and motivating people to include physically active lifestyle is an important strategy for lowering the risk of non-communicable diseases.  Physical exercise plays a critical role in the prevention and management of chronic conditions like stroke, heart disease and diabetes. It has favorable impact on various established risk factors for chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, and heart attack. Physical exercise in combination with cardiorespiratory fitness reduces the risk of developing hypertension. When combined with healthy eating and medication use, moderate physical activity leads to weight loss, lower blood pressure, reduced bad cholesterol and total cholesterol in blood.

Due to their close contact with clients, nurses can aid motivate individuals to make health behavior changes. The nurse assists clients in designing and developing action plan on physical activity programs. The nurse can assess and counsel clients on the health benefits of physical activity and exercise. The nurse can also counsel the client on the recommended physical activity for health and advise the client how to plan and implement a physical activity intervention. Guideline recommends middle-aged adults to get involved in physical activity in at least 2 hours 30 minutes of moderate aerobic physical activity spread throughout the week. Aerobic physical activity must be done in episodes of 20 minutes of duration and spread across the week. Alternatively, one can do 75 minutes of vigorous intensity aerobic exercise a week (Kundapur, Khan, & Kakkar, 2019). The duration of weekly moderate-intensity physical activity can be increased to 5 hour for additional health benefits. Achieving high echelon of fitness is critical particularly for persons at risk for chronic diseases.

Trusting, therapeutic relationship is key in gaining cooperation with middle-aged patient. The nurse can also inspire and encourage clients by speaking how active they are in daily life. This motivation is meant to help the patient consider their health behavior as well as desired health behavior.
