The Art of Persuasion

The Coronavirus pandemic that hit the world in December 2019 has had many far-reaching effects on individuals, organizations and societies. Almost everywhere in the world, stay-at-home directives were issued in a bid to contain the rapidly spreading virus. These policies were necessary especially in minimizing contact between people, which is the major mode of transmission of the disease; nonetheless, they carry some potentially negative health implications. For most people, simple things such as walking to school/work and taking the stairs to one’s office are very effective in maintaining physical activity that keeps one healthy. As such, much as people stay home whenever possible to prevent transmitting or contracting COVID-19, it is equally important for individuals to set aside some time in their daily schedules in which they will engage in physical exercise to keep fit.

We resumed working from the office in January this year and the excitement about meeting each other and just interacting in the workplace was immense. When Jean, my co-worker and friend, turned up for work the first day, I could hardly recognize her save for her bubbliness and funny jokes. She had added so much weight. “COVID-19 treated you so well pal; seems we have been malnourishing you here in the office”, I teased her. When I asked her if she had contemplated starting exercising, she said she would love to do but where would she get the time, especially with job and family demands? Acknowledging that such responsibilities could be obstacles, I reminded her that obstacles will always be there and it’s our duty to overcome or address them. I suggested that she joins me for a 30-minute jogging session after work on Monday the coming week. Before then, I encouraged her to review her timetable at home to accommodate the 30 minutes of physical exercise. She agreed to that and it has been over a month of jogging after work not only on Mondays but five days a week!

Reflecting on that moment of persuasion, I feel that the moment was successful because the goal was achieved; my friend is now exercising with me. I attribute this success to the strategies I used to persuade her. I acknowledged her concerns and demonstrated respect for her views whilst making practical recommendations to address these concerns. I was careful to use respectful language and make logical suggestions, and this is what won her over.
