Reaching Career Goals
My long-term career goal is to own my company one day. As part of my efforts to acquire relevant skills and experience, I am currently serving as an Administrative Assistant in a utility company. In my current position, my main duties and responsibilities are ensuring that the company runs efficiently and effectively through well organized and managed processes. Specifically, my key duties are scheduling appointments, ensuring that files are well organized, managing correspondence between the company and clients/stakeholders, and assisting staff members as necessary. Serving in this capacity is preparing me for my future as a company owner as I am learning how to handle clients, coordinate staff, and maintain proper records.
The Global Dimensions course that I am currently taking has equipped me with very valuable lessons and skills that will greatly help me to establish and manage my future company successfully. One of the key topics that have been covered in the course is culture. More precisely, we have learnt about the different national cultures and their influence on business. Through this course, I am now aware that my approach to business and customers will differ significantly across countries. I have thus learnt the importance of being culturally sensitive and relevant with the products I offer, the way I deal with customers, and also being familiar with regulations and policies in different countries.
From the resources that we have used in this module, I have realized that international business is a very wide topic that requires one to engage in in-depth study. As an example, the sub-topic on market considerations for global business revealed that there are a number of factors that companies or individuals thinking of venturing into the international market must become master. One of the issues or topics that captured my interest is that of logistics. Given that a company’s success is determined, in part, by how well it manages its logistics, I am interested in taking a course in logistics and supply chain management at some point in future. This will help me learn how to run my future company efficiently.
