Planning a Therapeutic Recreation Activity

People with intelligent and physical disability have weaker joints and muscles, inability to walk, difficulty finding social subtleties, and limitation in cognitive functioning. To stay healthy, they must participate in recreational activities and physical activity appropriate to their condition.

Planned Activity: Walking

One planned activity for this group is walking. This activity is appropriate they can move with the help of their electric wheelchairs. Walking is a cardiovascular exercise that increases body endurance and improves heart rate (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2015). It also improves mental and physical health, and wellbeing. In addition, it boosts the mood, enhance self-esteem, eases depression, and relieves stress. Besides health benefits, participating in walking activity offers opportunities for friendship promotion and social interaction. Walking the most common form physical activity that is easy to perform, even by those confined to electronic wheelchair.

Duration: the group walking session lasts for 40 minutes 2 days a week for 10 weeks. The activity is split down to 5 minute warm-ups, 30 of walking, and 5 minutes of cool down.

Desired outcome: The expected outcomes are improved strength and gross motor function. These outcomes may be assessed by observing the participating repeating or maintaining the learned behavior, obtaining feedback from participants, and using measuring scales to measure functional abilities, cardiovascular and strength (Rimmer, & Rowland, 2008).

The alternative planned activity is music therapy. Young people with mild disability respond quite well to music activities as music brings joy, arouses emotions, motivates actions, captivates attention, and provides success. Music incorporates visual, auditory, kinesthetic system and tactical system. Moreover, music is an excellent way to express oneself and connect with others. Music activities include instrument playing, singing and dancing. All these tasks help improve motor functions due to the exercises and movements.
