On-Site Childcare Program Proposal

Onsite Childcare Proposal

Two months ago, I made an extra effort to try as much as possible to accommodate our employees’ needs but noticed that many of my team members are younger professionals with young children who are struggling to find affordable child care that is flexible enough to meet the demands of Firm X’s shift schedules. Some of our best employees come to work distracted or take off productive time to go and care for their young families. Additionally, daycare is always inflexible to fit within the work schedule. Moreover, affordable childcare is out of reach for some families (Chicca, 2019). Childcare issues increase absenteeism. Childcare issues increase turnover rates. Childcare issues increase recruiting and training costs. And in turn, these can negatively affect work quality, productivity and ultimately the business’ profitability.

I propose that Firm X would introduce onsite daycare for employees to use. Installing onsite daycare will lift a burden off of employees, as they will have the comfort of knowing their children are close by. This could be logistically very flexible and convenient, and financially reasonable, as childcare can be very expensive for some parents (Miller, 2019). The employees can bring their kids to work where they can have ample time concentrating and focusing on working, knowing the children are safe.  Employees who perceive the organizational culture to be more supportive of their personal needs are less stressed, feel less burnout, and more successful in balancing work and family life are more productive, loyal, and more committed (Cleeland, 2020).

On-site daycare will save employees time who have challenges finding affordable and convenient childcare. This is an opportunity to appropriate and value our employees. It is an opportunity to realize the effect of personal lives on our workplace and consider the best solutions of satiating the employees’ personal commitments in order to foster workplace productivity (Marzullo, 2019). Workplace daycare can lower absenteeism and increase employee morale because a handful of employees are required to take time off work to care for their children. This results in reduced company costs. Saving is also realized when new mothers return to work sooner, enabling the company to save in hiring a replacement.

The provision of daycare would attract and strengthen recruitment and retain the best talent. Daycare is important for retaining the best employees and thus avoiding the high cost incurred in hiring new employees (Marzullo, 2019). Onsite daycare would also increase diversity and enhance corporate reputation. Employer-supported childcare would also improve work-life integration and increase gender equality.

We can learn from experience- what works on the ground, what others are doing, and how we should proceed from here. Home Depot, Clif Bar, Cisco, and Patagonia have all built a reputation as a socially responsible organizations through the provision of in-house childcare at the workplace. After Patagonia started its in-house childcare program, the company witnessed 100% of mothers resuming work after maternity leave. In sum, Patagonia has been able to recover roughly 91% of its calculable costs yearly since the inception of the childcare program (Rochfort, 2019). Patagonia gets so much returns of its investment back due to two things: its childcare program improves employee retention and comes with good tax breaks.

Onsite childcare is highly effective, albeit very expensive for businesses, especially for the small ones. The initial cost for launching onsite childcare is large, but the return on investment would be significant. Sharing costs between employees and employers could reduce the cost. To offer on-site childcare, Firm X can decide to operate its own on-site childcare team, contract childcare services to the outside company, or provide complementary services to employees. It would be a win-win situation given that Firm X’s employees with small children have a challenge accessing childcare that is affordable, convenient, and sufficient.
