Anne Boykin & Savina Schoenhofer’s theory of Nursing as Caring is a general nursing theory that can be employed as a theoretical framework to explain any nursing situation. The theory holds that all human beings are caring people (Purnell, 2018). Nursing focuses on nurturing persons growing in caring and living caring. On the other hand, caring refer to the intentional prescence of the nurse with another individual who is growing in caring. Nursing as Caring is grounded in numerous assumptions, including persons are caring due to their humanness, persons are complete/whole in the moment, persons are caring moment to moment, personhood is living grounded in caring, nursing is a practiced disciple (a profession and a discipline), and personhood is enhanced in relationship with caring others (Purnell, 2018). I chose this theory because it can be used to ground practice, teaching and research. Nursing as Caring can be used in practice to enhance the morale of the nursing staff thereby leading to higher patient satisfaction. Staff members get the opportunity to develop better understanding of the key concepts of this theory like knowing self and other as caring.

The Symphonology Bioethical Theory

Husted and Husted’s Symphonology Bioethical Theory is a practice-based approach deals with the study of the patient-healthcare professional agreement. It is based on the premise that an agreement is key for a proper progress and collaboration. The agreement establishes the nature of the nurse-patient relationship (Scotto, 2018). Professional and ethical responsibilities are determined by this kind of relationship. Because nurses work in an environment that is ethically sensitive, they are required to commit to offering services which are ethical and respecting. I chose this theory because it establishes a viewpoint from which a patient and a health care provider can understand each other. Health care ethical decisions greatly influence the lives of providers and patients. To that end, the Symphonology contain bioethical standards which guide patient-nurse agreement. These standards include freedom, autonomy, objectivity, fidelity, beneficence, and self-assertion (Scotto, 2018). Nurses can use this theory to protect vulnerable patients and help them make difficulty bioethical decisions.
