It examines the importance of a nurse legislator in the advocacy. The paper also describes a recent legislation resulting from nurse advocacy, its accomplishments, and the more steps needed.

A Legislator who is Also a Nurse, Role in Advocacy for Improvement of Health Care Delivery, and Specific Bills Supported

Eddie Bernice Johnson is an influential legislator who also doubles as a nurse. She is currently representing the 30th congressional district of Texas. In the year 1992, she became the first registered nurse to serve as a congresswoman (ANA, 2021). Johnson is Democratic Party member. She is one of the few American politicians who have been in the forefront in advocating for the improvement of the delivery of health care. She has supported some important bills on the same. These include the National Nurses Week bill, National Nurse Act of 2011, Engineering Biology Research and Development Act of 2019, and Tech to Save Moms Act.

The National Nurses Week legislation was introduced to the House on February 25, 2009. The bill sought for recognition of a national week for nurses between May 6 and 12 (Ann, 2020). The sponsor of the legislation felt that setting aside such a week could be the best way of acknowledging the important contributions made by nurses to the health care system of the United States.  The National Nurse Act of 2011 advocated for the amendment of the Public Health Service Act in order for the National Nurse for Public Health position to be created (Ann, 2020; ANA, 2021). The endorsement of the legislation was motivated by the need to empower nurses for them to effectively combat national health priorities.

The Engineering Biology Research and Development Act of 2019 was introduced on November 27, 2018. Its goal was to advocate for a coordinated research initiative that could ensure the United States’ continuous leadership in the process of engineering biology (Ann, 2020; ANA, 2021). The Tech to Save Moms Act is one the recent bills supported by Johnson. It was introduced to the Congress on March 9, 2020. Its aim was to promote improved maternal health outcomes for populations that are underserved (Ann, 2020). This could be achieved through making technology investments.

Legislation within the Last 5 Years because of Nurse Advocacy, Accomplishments, and Additional Steps to Continue Advocacy for this Issue

One of the legislations that have been effected in the United States as a result of nurse advocacy is Childhood Cancer Survivorship, Treatment, Access, and Research Act (STAR Act). This bill was passed on June, 5 2018. The objective of the STAR Act was to promote the identification of child cancer patients, improve the quality of their life, increase research for childhood cancer, and enhance pediatric expertise (Alliance for Childhood Cancer, 2021). The Oncology Nursing (ONS) pushed for the passing of the bill by writing persuasive letters to various House leaders. It was eventually passed in March of 2018.

The ratification of the STAR Act helped to speed up pediatric cancer research since it focused on the impact of the disease, and treatment procedures. This increased the number of survivors due to discovery of better treatment methods (Alliance for Childhood Cancer, 2021). Despite these important developments, more is required in order for nurse advocacy for this particular issue to continue. For instance, further research on how to minimize the side effects of the condition, and promote quick recovery is necessary. This is important for improved patient outcomes among children with cancer.
