“Globalism” and “Globalization”

Describe and explain a clear distinction between “globalism” and “globalization” after viewing the video and reading the article.

Globalism is the underlying basic network that covers multi-continental distances. It is a political ideology centered on the notion that goods and people should cross national borders without any restrictions. By contrast, globalization is the process involving the spreading of goods and services, information, technology, ideas, jobs and capital across national borders (Reysen, & Katzarska-Miller, 2013).

Describe how being a global citizen in the world of advanced technology can be beneficial to your success in meeting your personal, academic, and professional goals.

Global citizens can allow me to learn requisite skills and advance my academic knowledge (Jacobs & Monfils, 2010). Global citizen in today’s technological advances is important in helping one acquire the requisite skills to effectively compete in the global job market (Jacobs & Monfils, 2010). Being a global citizen in the age of advanced technology will shape my identity as a better and responsible person. At the personal level, modern technology makes it possible to interact with families, friends, and friends, thus exchange ideas and information (Jacobs & Monfils, 2010). As a global citizen, I am able to relate and build partnerships and friendships with other global citizens who share similar aspirations. By interacting with others and getting to them, I become more confident, open to contrary views, nonjudgmental, and approachable. Professionally, the status of global citizens along with advanced technology will equip me with marketable skills to compete with others in the global job market. Global citizen can benefit my personal brand and increase scope of my work.

Explain why there has been disagreement between theorists about the definition of global citizenship and develop your own definition of global citizenship after reading the article by Reysen and Katzarska-Miller.

There is no agreed single definition of global citizenship; rather it is defined differently by different theorists. This disagreement results from the fact that theorists draw from educational, political, philosophical, developmental, and even theological disciplines and perspectives to define the concept. For example, educational theorists focus on the theme of global awareness in their definition while philosophical theorists focus on ethics and morality. Informed by the article by Reysen and Katzarska, define the concept of global citizen by incorporating the themes of global awareness and normative environment. Thus global citizenship refers to awareness, caring, acceptance of diversity, advancing social justice while upholding a sense of responsibility to act and sustainability (Reysen, & Katzarska-Miller, 2013). I would define this concept as the capability to relate to global community by showing respect to cultural diversity, demonstrating greater multiculturalism, and promoting social justice and good deeds to all.

Choose two of the six outcomes of global citizenship from the article (i.e., intergroup empathy, valuing diversity, social justice, environmental sustainability, intergroup helping, and the level of responsibility to act for the betterment of this world).

The selected two outcomes are intergroup helping and valuing diversity. Intergroup helping is about assisting others outside one’s in-group. There are significant gaps in global society, particularly in relation to socioeconomic and health disparities. As a result, some people lead happy lives while others languish in poverty, disabilities, poor health, and illiteracy. It is the role of a global citizen to reach out and better the lives of the less advantaged. Intergroup helping exposes one to the realities of a global society, and this influences the future behavior of global citizens to champion for policies that uplift the living standards of all (Reysen, & Katzarska-Miller, 2013). Helping is achieved through donations, working on transnational organizations serving the less fortunate and volunteering locally.

Valuing diversity is about showing interest in diverse cultures of the world. Global citizens accept and respect cultures of others. By learning and understanding others, people can live with those with contrary viewpoints and perspectives without judging (Fryer, & Loury, 2013).

Explain why those two outcomes are the most important in becoming a global citizen compared to the others.

Intergroup helping is so important in promoting the interests of other social groups that are unable to provide for their needs. Intergroup helping portrays one’s in-group in the positive light. It also exposes one to the realities of global society, which are often not acknowledge\d for the purposing of designing policies to solve underlying issues.

Valuing diversity: diversity is a serious issue facing the world. Individuals are being judged based on their cultural, religion, race, and nationality rather than the content of their character (Cabrera, 2010). As a result, some groups of people are wrongly assigned labels. Valuing diversity means accepting that each one of us is unique and no one is superior to the other. This implies that individuals should not be judged, treated, or looked differently because they belong to the out-group. Valuing diversity is important in ensuring togetherness and close cooperation (Fryer & Loury, 2013).

Describe at least two personal examples or events in your life that illustrate the development of global citizenship based on the two outcomes you chose.

My class is made up of students of diverse cultural backgrounds. There is this tendency by students of mainstream culture to demean students from minority cultures. This circumstance forced me to relate with the minority and to tell the bullies to back off.  Judging others based on their culture is wrong and stereotypical. As a global citizen, I have driven by this desire to learn and better understand other cultures to avoid being judgmental. In so doing, I can learn other cultures and be respectful.

In respect to inter-group helping, I had the opportunity to volunteer in a local community that had been hit by flooding. The victims lost their possessions and property to the flood. The desperation and hopelessness I witnessed in these people overwhelmed me. But the help and support they got helped them to recovery and build their lives. This experience drove me to always help those in trouble in order to recover.

Identify two specific general education courses.

SOC 120: Introduction to Ethics and Social Responsibility and ENG 125: Introduction to Literature.

Explain how each course influenced you to become a global citizen.

SOC 120 has increased my awareness of behaviors and actions that seem unjust, particularly in school and workplace. This has helped me to promote social justice, one of the outcomes of global citizenship. In addition, I have learned diverse cultures in ENG 125. This knowledge has enabled me to acknowledge, understand, and respect other cultures. In this regard, this course has shaped my value for diversity.
