GMO′s in our food
Thesis: The adoption and production of genetically modified crops and food have raised many questions and controversies despite the fact that genetic engineering would address hunger problem, introduce food with improved nutrients and vitamins and improve economic growth.
Annotated Bibliography
Messer, A’ndrea Elyse. Genetically Engineered Foods Are Needed to Feed the World.” Genetically Engineered Foods. Ed. Debra A. Miller. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2012.
Andrea Messer discusses about genetically modified foods and how these foods can help feed the world population. She claims that genetic engineering crops can solve the problem of malnutrition and limited resources, issues that traditional farming has failed to solve. Messer cites many advantages of genetic engineering technique, including the ability to create plants and crops that thrive well under limited resources, tolerate harsh environmental conditions and rich in nutrients.
This article can be a valuable source it offers more information that can be used to build a concrete arguments in support of GM foods. This article can be used to counter opposing views. The author has used evidence to support her arguments with in-text citation and reference list of sources used. Messer has also authority in this field, being a senior science and research information officer at Pennsylvania State University. however, I have one problem with this article: it does not address how genetic engineering can be correctly implemented to feed the population.
Maghari, Behrokh M. and Ali M. Ardekani. Genetically modified foods and the social concerns. Avicenna Journal of Medical Technology, 3.3 (2011): 109-117.
This article raises issues about GMOs, such as unpredictability, the impact on human health and environment and biodiversity. Maghari, and Ardekani also cited limited research in this field and argue how GMO testing by scientist is driven by commercial interests than science. Because the people who conduct the experiments are from the GM companies with commercial interests, they are more likely to be biased in their findings. The authors describe how scientists in an experiment compare a GM crop with a traditional crop taken from a different area.
This article can be a valuable source to use in my research, especially when making comparison between the benefits and risks of GMO and in developing counter-arguments. I plan to include and critique the opposing views presented this article in my research paper to build a strong case.
The article is credible The article does provide supporting evidence and cite sources in in-text. The authors have authority in this field. My concern is that their version of the topic is biased.
Malkan, Stacy. GMO 2.0 Foods Coming Your Way: Will They Be Labeled? HUFFPOST, 2017, September 29
This article is an interview between Malkan and Michael Hansen. The interview looks at the new genetically modified organisms that found their way to supermarkets and the lack of regulatory mechanisms. Hansen believes GMOs are not backed up by concrete scientific evidence. The article concludes for the need to regulate and regulate the new GMOs to protect consumers from unpredictable risks. MGO 2.0 are a new genetically modified organisms produced by gene silencing, gene editing or algae engineering. The article claims that there are attempts to exempt GMO 2.0 from labeling despite having unintended effects. Milkan offers that biotech companies are using other names for new genetic engineering techniques in order to avoid necessary regulations and public backlash.
Michael Hansan is senior scientist at Consumer Union. While he has expertise in food, arsenic, GMO label and organic foods, his view are one-sided. Nonetheless I plan to use information in this to illustrate how the opponents of GMO, like the author, are wrong and correct misinformation.

The purpose of this article assure audience that GMOs are not as bad are we are made to believe. Entine claims that there is no scientific justification to consider GMOs less safe than organic food. Genetically engineered food is just as safer as organic food. Research has found no damaging effects of GMOs on animals and humans. Entine allays concerns that little have been done in terms of research and testing to understand to indentify the harms GMO pose to humans and environment. The author assures readers not to fear consuming GMOs as they have been tested severally and found to be safe.
This article is a valuable source to use in my project as it provides useful information supporting thesis. I plan to use this article to build concrete argument in support of GMO adoption and production.
The article is well written and is supported by evidence The author’s point of view is that GMO’s are just as safe as or even safer than conventional or organic food. GMO’s have in fact been researched and have proven that there are no damaging effects on humans or animals. This article refutes the article by David Suzuki, Understanding GMO. David’s article states that the topic of GMO’s has not been researched or tested enough to understand the affects. This article reassures that GMO’s have been tested by many sources many times. This disagrees with the thesis. The thesis predicts that GMO’s are dangerous to our health and environment, but this article contradicts this saying that there should be no fears consuming modified foods.

This is a youtube video interview of Corrina Rachels and Vincent Bellonzi in which they discuss about health impacts of GMOS. In this interview, Dr. Bellonzi touches on many topical areas regarding clinical issues associated with GMOs, such as toxicity, digestive concerns and allergies. He wonders whether people should be eating products that appear to be toxic to some insects. In addition to risks, Dr. Belonzi discusses health benefits accruing from GMOs but cautions people to be more careful. Dr. Belonzi concludes by expressing several factors to consider in the debate about GMOs.
This article gives a balanced analysis of the issue of GMOs. It has great ideas regarding benefits of GMOs. I plan to use this video to make my research strong.
This is a credible source. Dr. Belonzi is a clinical nutritionist and therefore has authority in this field.
