Gearing Toward the Youth in Church

In any society, the youth are considered as a very important group especially due to the notion that youth are the leaders of tomorrow. The Lausanne Movement (4) describes the youth as “a generation of unbounding energy, a generation with high powered creativity…a generation with immense potential [and] the largest generation world-wide”.  Jesus Christ himself acknowledges the value of the youth, saying that “whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18: 4). As such, the youth need to be given the attention they deserve, being provided with necessary opportunities to realize and exploit their potential in a way that adds value not only to themselves but to the society as a whole. This means that in all settings, whether academic or in church, programs aimed at empowering and helping the youth to navigate successfully through this important phase of human development. A common observation in churches is that unless appropriate programs are in place to keep the youth committed to church, most people in their youthful years tend to lose interest in church matters and activities (Smith). Church leaders must learn to view such trends and behaviors as normal; they must devise ways keeping the youth active in church activities and help them to set an example to their peers “in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity” (Timothy 4:12) .

One way of leading youth to church and retaining them is by adopting flexible structures. One thing about the youth is that they are highly vulnerable to changes taking place in the society and want security and guidance as they respond to these changes (Lausanne Movement 4). In other words, church leaders must recognize that the youth are facing somewhat new challenges, responding to which calls for a safe environment. To achieve this, programs meant for the youth in church should be flexible with enough time for the youth to discuss sensitive issues either amongst themselves or with their pastor. For example, church leaders should ensure that not all youth meetings focus on Bible study; time should be created for the youth to discuss important topics such as drugs, peer pressure, and drugs.

Secondly, the church will reach out to and retain more young people if it employs a relational approach in handling youth. The Lausanne Movement (8) observes that developing personal relationships is the primary and most effective method through which the gospel can be successfully shared with young individuals. The explanation for this is that young people have a natural hunger for mentors as well as friends who will help them to discover their worth and develop their identity. In light of this, church leaders should consider recruiting people to serve as purely youth pastors. The people chosen to serve in this capacity must be enthusiastic, highly energized and creative on effective strategies of interacting with young people in church. More importantly, youth pastors should be conversant with trends within the society and ways of incorporating this into youth programs (Smith). In short, the youth ministry will be more effective and rewarding to all members if there is a youth pastor with whom all young people in church can easily relate with. The youth pastor must understand the scripture in 1 Peter 3:15b, which requires teachers of the word to “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks [them] to give the reason for the hope that [they] have but to do this with gentleness and respect”.

Lastly, young people’s obsession with and knowledge of technology could be used as a strategy of keeping them actively involved in church. It goes without saying that the technological era that characterizes the world today has greatly affected the way people interact with technology (Smith). Stimulating young people’s interest in church matters can, thus, be achieved if church leaders make modern technology an integral part of the youth ministry. For example, young people should be given responsibilities such as designing pages and content for church websites. Additionally, the church should create a WhatsApp group and a Facebook page for the youth to chat while also sharing ideas on issues that affect them.
