Human acquired virus (HIV), which is responsible for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), is one of the most serious health challenges facing the globe today. Around 38 million people are presently living with HIV/AIDS while millions of other people have lost their lives through AIDS-related causes (UNAIDS 2020). Majority of HIV positive people lack access to treatment and care at the time the world is struggling to find a cure. Although this disease is becoming manageable enabling people with HIV to leady healthy lives, not all of them have access to effective prevention, treatment and care. Millennium development goal three is about combating HIV/AIDS. There is need to scale up prevention, treatment and control efforts to combat this disease, especially in least developed countries.

HIV/AIDS has generated a significant increase in overall disease burden and crowded out health resources allocated to the care of traditional illnesses. AIDS weakens immune system infected persons thereby making them susceptible to opportunistic diseases like tuberculosis. AIDS-related illnesses have affected the ability of health care systems to adjust to the increased demand for AIDS care in secondary and tertiary levels (The Kaiser Family Foundation 2020). In addition to increasing healthcare expenditures, caring for HIV/AIDS patients is impacting on the morale and motivation of public healthcare professionals. Caring for such patients can be stressful and thus lead to staff absenteeism. Healthcare professionals are not immune to this pandemic and many have lost life to it leading to shortage of workforce.

There exists a vast network of global partnership between healthcare delivery systems in the developing and developed countries created to address global health issues. Such peer-to-peer collaborations are based on training approaches meant promote capacity building and expertise in health workforce. Global health initiatives like the Global Fund and PEPFAR facilitate the increase in development assistance for health in health systems of partner countries.

Countries have improved access to antiretroviral therapy for AIDS patients. The US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is a United States effort to combat the disease. Multiple US agencies, departments and programs are involved in addressing this global epidemic. The Academic these global partnerships attract funding to diseases, stimulating countries to craft programs and policies that strengthen healthcare systems and boost shareholder participation. Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) is an academic partnership that leverages public-sector academic medical center to deliver healthcare in developing countries. It focuses on strengthening healthcare system, scaling up service delivery for HIV/AIDS care. In Kenya, AMPATH partners with Moi University and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital to scale up the prevention, treatment and control of HIV/AIDS in western Kenya (Mercer et al. 2018). AMPATH is of the implementing partners of PEPFAR in Africa. AMPATH has investigated in infrastructure, leadership, information systems, supply chains and workforce training to build capacity in research, service delivery and education (Mercer et al. 2018).
