The health-illness continuum concept can be described as the process of change in an individual’s health, from extremely good health to death. The position of a person’s health fluctuates between the two points depending on the state of the body’s health (Potter, 2020). The health service a patient receives can be impacted by how the caregiver or healthcare service provider understands the health-illness spectrum. The various states of illness or health come with experiences that are important to public service providers because it guides them on what should be done or not to improve the health of an individual.

The Health-illness continuum perspective is a vital tool in guiding the health service provider on how to manage patients, particularly concerning bettering their experiences. A very sick person requires close assistance to recover based on the degree of illness (Rosen & Hoang, 2017). The understanding of the health-illness continuum offers the health service provider an avalanche of information on what type of care to give to each patient. The priority of care and treatment is determined by where one is on the health-illness continuum. A person whose health is okay is not given priority over someone who needs emergency medical care. The level of attention given to the latter is higher than what is given to the former (Rosen & Hoang, 2017). Healthcare providers must know how to handle each case according to the urgency to enhance the patient’s human experience.

Moreover, knowledge about the health-continuum perspective helps the health service provider to understand the type of services and treatment to offer the patient. Each positioning of the patient on then health-illness influence the kind of health needs one can be given. For those on the extreme right, they can be advised on how to keep themselves healthy.  For instance, a person may show signs of becoming overweight, but he is not sick; as a health service provider, the best that can be offered to him is advice to cut the weight and observe the diet well to avert potential lifestyle diseases. On the other hand, a person suffering from hypertension can be put on drugs to help him cope-up with the condition. The quality of healthcare services offered is improved with proper knowledge of the health-illness continuum.

The Illness-Wellness Continuum is important in helping the healthcare giver promote the patient’s health welfare through preventive and curative measures. Preventive treatment is applied to help an individual avoid a disease or health issue before it symptoms of illness. Preventive treatment is given to persons who are on the left side of the health-illness continuum (Sulis, 2020). A health service provider should be in a position to judge where an individual can be positioned on the health-illness spectrum before deciding what type of healthcare service to offer a person.

 Furthermore, the health-illness spectrum relied upon to educate individuals about health risk factors and how to avoid them to lead a flourishing life. Preventive measures can be explored to manage chronic diseases that have no cure, such as cancer, can be avoided through preventive measures. A health service provider does not only focus on curative services but also preventive. People can avoid some health complications if they are made aware of the risk factors that predispose them to illness.

The Health-illness continuum is also useful in helping the health service provider give the patient who has irreversible health issues to avoid premature death. For instance, a person who has incurable diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be advised on what to do to avoid or lessen the effects of the disease and avoid aggravating the condition. This goes hand in hand with the type of medication that is administered to the patient (Kishan, 2020). Consequently, as a health service provider, I am better positioned to manage patients in a more caring and professional way if I have understood the health-illness continuum well.

A person can be helped to move from a neutral position on the health-illness continuum to an extremely healthy position by the health service provided. However, to attain this, one must first understand where an individual lies on the health-illness spectrum. Persons who are in a neutral position are neither sick nor healthy; any slight deviation can throw them into a healthy or sick position. A health service provider must assess the patient’s health to determine what type of care he needs, including immediate and non-immediate. Self-actualization is attained when an individual is very healthy, which brings happiness and confidence in their health. This can be attained by preventing diseases by moving to the extreme left of the health-illness continuum.

Personal Reflection

Personal health is very important in the life of any given person, which means that an individual must be conscious of behaviors that impact his or her well-being and health. I am healthy, with no active illness, meaning that I am well. However, I have behavioral factors that may affect my health and also determine where I can feature on the health-illness continuum. I have a habit of not exercising much, which in the long run may impact my health. I spend much time indoors, on the computer, and other non-physical activities.

Moreover, I have a habit of eating chunk foods, which is a health risk. Less exercise and unhealthy eating habits predispose one to lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart attacks, and high blood pressure. Eating habits are a challenge to peoples’ health in contemporary society because of how unhealthy diets continue to ravage health. Refined sugars that are found in drinks such as soda are not good when consumed in large quantities without physical exercise. In this respect, my eating habit distracts me from a healthy life.

Options

The options I have to include to manage the aforementioned behaviors and  improve my health include:

Physical Exercising

I can embark on regular physical exercise to keep my body physically and physiologically fit to help me move towards health wellness on the health-illness continuum. I can do morning or evening jogging, which is an easier option if I can get a little serious.  Physical exercise is good for keeping lifestyle diseases such as heart attacks, high blood pressure, thrombosis, diabetes, obesity, and kidney failure (Cooper &  Gosnell, 2015). Regular exercise helps to strengthen the cardiovascular muscles, burn calories, and keep the body muscles healthy, among other things.

Eating healthy diets

Eating healthy meals is one of the most viable options that I have to enhance my health wellness. I can switch to a food with low fat, refined sugar, and salt to deal with diseases that are related to eating habits. Fast-foods are a problem in contemporary society, an issue that I am battling with too. Most of the food that is served in fast-food restaurants is unhealthy for long-term consumption. However, because of a lack of time to prepare healthy food for my consumption or to access restaurants that can offer healthy diets, I often consume unhealthy food from fast-food joints (Potter, 2020). Consequently, I have an option to cut down and even end the consumption of unhealthy meals by starting to take healthy diets, whether at home or in restaurants and hotels.

In conclusion, the health-illness continuum is useful in guiding a health service provider in caring for patients by influencing decisions on what type of care and medication to administer. Treatment for injuries and illness aims at bringing the patient to a neutral point; however, according to the continuum, this is not enough to guarantee individual string health. A patient can be helped to move father to the extreme left, where one is healthier. As a healthcare service provider, the health-illness continuum helps me in deciding on how best to take care of the patients concerning their position on the spectrum. My healthy living is also impacted by how I understand the health-illness continuum, which includes the choices of how to improve my wellness by exercising and eating healthy meals.
