Analysis of a Primary Source
A primary source refers to a document written within the time period that a given researcher is interested in. Unlike secondary sources, primary sources tend to give first-hand information about occurrences or people. This explains why most researchers consider them as important resources in their studies.
One of the most important primary sources that were written during the 19th century was On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. This source is in form of a book that was written by Charles Darwin. It was published in the year 1859.
The purpose of the book was to put forward a new scientific theory of evolution. According to Darwin, humans evolved through natural selection (Darwin, 1859). This occurred over generations. Thus, the process was the major agent of change. At the time of its publication, Darwin’s book had a significant impact on scientific thought and science in general. It provided important evidence on how common descent led to diversity of life through the process of evolution (Darwin, 1859).
From his work, one can learn that Darwin did not believe in the role of divine intervention in influencing the process of evolution.
