Alcohol

Alcohol

Family violence, crime and poor health have been attributed to the intake of alcohol. Taking of alcohol was established to convert people into drunkards who are susceptible to committing acts that are considered as vices in the society. In addition to this, alcohol also implicates on all cells in the body which also includes the central nervous system. Thus, when a person is exposed to the intake of alcohol for a long time, the mind becomes fixed and dependent on the alcohol. Moreover, withdrawal from the same also comes with its own symptoms. Accordingly, knowledge with regard to the causes of alcoholism and addiction can help in preventing alcohol related issues. Consequently, this report is going to explicate the various risk factors allied with alcohol.

Cause of Alcohol Consumption and Addiction

Genetic factors are a contributing factor to the usage and addiction on alcohol. They account for about half of all the risks allied with alcoholism. These genetic variations play a role in alcoholism in a number of ways. Thus, through research, it has been found out that the amygdale of the people whose family histories have cases of alcoholism is smaller. The amygdala plays the role associated with emotional aspects of craving. Thus, if a person hails from a family where parents drink alcohol, the person has an escalated probability of engaging in the same (Volkow et al., 2010). In addition to this, people may inherit lack of ordinary signals that make other people stop the intake of alcohol (Metcalf, 2010). Apart from the genetic factors, emotional and social factors too play a role in the intakes and addiction on alcohol. They even lead to relapses in people who have chosen to abstain from the same. The risk factors comprise of internal temptation, social pressure, anger and frustration. This, alcohol acts as an obstruction to the emotional pain, hence it is perceived as a loyal friend and substitutes failed human relationships. It is also allied with the feeling of freedom and leads to the loss of inhibition (Simon, 2013).

Other risk factors allied with drinking of alcohol, include anxiety, depression and other mood disorders. In addition to this, feeling out of place and low self-esteem are also contributing factors to alcoholism. Both men and women who have ever been abused either sexually or physically during childhood have a possibility of engaging in alcohol intake and addiction. Children who engage in taking of alcohol for the first time between 11 and 14 years of age have an escalated probability of developing problems associated with alcohol drinking than those who do the same either at a younger age or when they are older.

Influence also plays a role in alcohol addiction. Influence can either be from peers or from the media. For instance, some of the funny commodities like Superbad, Project X and The Hangover are funny and allied with alcohol. In addition to this, there are many commercials about alcohol. For instance, while watching a show, alcohol or liquor has to accompany it. The same applies to magazines where advertisement of the alcoholic drinks is done. Businesses in the alcohol industry are also booming making profits worthy millions on annual basis. This also gives prominence to the drinking behavior. Peer pressure also pushes one to drinking alcohol. For instance, a high school student can be dared by a friend to take alcohol during a keg party. Peer pressure is at all ages. People can also explicate the “good effects” of alcohol. For instance, a person can claim that drinking makes him cool or deal with his problems. As result, this tempts another person to try it out to also experience the same feeling. With time, the person becomes an addict.

The implications of alcohol on men and women differ. In the United States, anyone who is under the age of 21 years is not supposed to consume alcohol. However, many girls under this age indulge in alcohol intake (Alcohol and Women, 2014). It has been established that 37 percent of girls in 9th grade use alcohol. On averages, the girls are aged 14 years old. Younger white women and middle aged black women have higher drinking habits. Factors that make women susceptible to drinking include stress, history of sexual or physical abuse, history of depression, the capability of holding liquor in comparison to the others, having a partner who is a heavy drinker and having parents and siblings who drink (NIAAA, 2008). Men are able to hold their alcohol better than their women counterparts. Moreover, men are twice likely to be dependent on alcohol as women (Alcohol and Men, 2014). Men resolve to alcohol as a result of peer pressure, feeling cool and as a way of dealing with stress.

As much as alcohol has been established to have adverse effects on the health of the consumer, it has healthy benefits if taken in moderation. Accordingly, alcohol diminishes the susceptibility of developing heart related health conditions. Furthermore, alcohol contributes to longevity of life. It can enhance the libido of a person and averts one from the development of common cold. Alcohol is also allied with a decrease in the development of dementia and diminishes the risk factors allied with gallstones (Bachai, 2013).
