Bowen, D.M. & Forrest, J.L. (2017).Translating Research for Evidence-Based Practice.  Retrieved on August 18, 2021 from https://lopes.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=ccm&AN=120577496&site=ehost-live&scope=site

This article discusses the process of critically appraising research or scientific literature to determine its clinical applicability or practicality. The authors outline the process and the questions to guide this critical evaluation. This guide helps determine the purpose of that study, PICO question addressed, the validity of the study, the statistical significant of the results and the validity and clinical applicability of evidence to the patient of interest. The authors recommend the integration of relevant and strong evidence into care treatment plan to improve patient outcomes. The strength of this article is that it offers useful criteria for evaluating the strength and quality of evidence. It also advocates for the use of PICO framework to appraise scientific literature and interpret the results. The PICO framework provides a systematic process for determining whether a research evidence from literature is valid and relevant to clinical practice.

Titler, M.G. et al., (2016). The Effect of Translating Research Into Practice Intervention to Promote Use of Evidence-Based Fall Prevention Interventions in Hospitalized Adults: A Prospective Pre-Post Implementation Study in the U.S. Applied Nursing Research, 31:52-9.doi: 10.1016/j.apnr.2015.12.004

This article discusses the use of evidence-based interventions to prevent falls in hospitalized adults. Finding suggest the use of translating research into practice intervention improved the use of evidence-based fall prevention interventions. This article proves that translating research findings into practice at the point of care delivery improves patient outcomes. The application of research evidence to improve quality of care is core to healthcare improvement. The strength of this study is that as many as 13 medical-surgical units from three different community hospitals across the Midwest region were included. This ensured representative sample of the target population in the region. The limitation is that only participants from medical-surgical unit took part.  Thus the findings cannot be generalizable to other units.

Farrugia, P., Petrisor, B.A., Farrokhyar, F., & Bhandari, M. (2010).Research questions, hypotheses and objectives. Canadian Journal of Surgery, 53 (4), 278-281

This article discusses essential considerations in the development of research questions, hypotheses and in defining research objectives. A good research question highlights the phenomenon under investigation, the intervention, participants and have clinical relevancy. It is feasible, interesting, new, ethical and relevant. The success of a study also depends on well-developed hypothesis and objectives. With hypothesis and objectives the reader can read and state clearly whether they are support or not by the study results. This article presents a FINER strategy for evaluating the ramification of a research question. FINER offers a framework that prompts readers to ask important questions when considering a study. The article’s limitation is the failure to emphasize that research questions and hypothesis are developed before data collection and thus not modified to obtain better results.

Mitchell, (2013). Selecting the Best Theory to Implement Planned Change. Nursing Management, 20(1); 32-37

The authors discuss the necessity of planned change in health care setting. They argue that planned change helps prepare for a new process, guaranteeing safe and effective implementation. They also discuss how comprehending and employing a change theory framework can help agents of change increase the likelihood of success. Three change theories and their application in practice are discussed. Lippitts’ change theory model links to change theory, which is a good thing. For example, the assessment phase incorporates Lewin’s unfreezing stage. This model however focuses more on the change agent’s role and responsibility rather than the change process itself.  Planned change are vulnerable to failure due to various potential barriers.

Petiprin, A. (2020). Nursing Theory. Retrieved on August 18, 2021 from https://nursing-theory.org/

This resource discusses the contribution of nursing theory to the evolution and development of nursing practice. It lists the many different theorists and the theories the developed from evidence to create frameworks for patient care. The resource also explains what is nursing, evidence-based nursing and various nursing techniques.  This resource recognizes that nursing theory is core to nursing practice as it is used by nurses to frame their thinking. The limitation of this resource is that it is very compressed and less detailed for layperson to read and understand.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement. (2020). Science of Improvement: Testing Changes. Retrieved on August 18, 2021 from http://www.ihi.org/resources/Pages/HowtoImprove/ScienceofImprovementTestingChanges.aspx

This resource discusses the importance of testing change ideas before implementing. Plan–do–study–act (PDSA) offers a framework for iterative testing of changes to improve. This scientific method is employed for action-oriented learning. PDSA is simple to understand and implement one is able to predict what happens each testing.  However, not all changes are feasible. Additionally, there are no standards for the application of PDSA.
